Duch matki

Działo się to ponad 50 lat temu. Mieszkaniec wsi Biardy pewnego zimowego poranka wyruszył do Łukowa. Miał do załatwienia w mieście jakieś urzędowe sprawy, więc przygotował wóz, zaprzągł konia i ruszył w drogę.

– A czego tam?

Postanowił ruszyć dalej, jednak koń uparcie parskał, rzucał łbem i ani drgnął. Okrył ją derką i pojechał do miasta.

The Spirit in the Fog

More than fifty years ago, on a freezing winter morning, a farmer from the village of Biardy set out for Łuków. He had some paperwork to take care of at a local government office, so he hitched his horse to a wagon and headed down the road before sunrise. A thick blanket of fog drifted over the fields as the first light of day appeared on the horizon.

The farmer was eager to arrive early. Anyone who had ever dealt with government offices knew that showing up late could mean waiting all day. His horse seemed unusually energetic that morning, trotting along without much encouragement.

As they entered the forest beyond Okniny, the fog grew so thick that visibility dropped to only a few yards. The horse suddenly slowed, then stopped completely. No amount of urging would make it move.

Frustrated, the farmer cracked his whip in the air. Just as he was about to try again, he noticed an elderly woman standing in the fog a short distance ahead. She wore an old-fashioned shawl and seemed strangely out of place.

A chill ran down his spine. He had never seen her before.

The woman said nothing. Instead, she looked at him with sadness in her eyes and pointed toward the woods. The farmer looked where she was pointing but saw only tangled brush and bare trees. When he turned back, the woman had disappeared.

His horse still refused to move. With no other choice, the farmer climbed down from the wagon and walked into the woods. A short distance from the road, he made a horrifying discovery.

A young girl, no older than five, was tied to a tree. She was dressed only in light clothing and was shaking violently from the cold.

The farmer quickly untied her, wrapped her in a blanket, and rushed her to Łuków. First, he took her to the hospital. Then he reported the incident to the authorities.

Investigators later learned that the girl’s father had abandoned her there. Following the death of his first wife, he had remarried. His new wife did not want to raise another woman’s child, and together they had decided to leave the girl in the woods.

The story was later told to my grandmother by her father, who had experienced the event himself. No one ever learned who the mysterious woman in the fog had been.

But he never doubted the answer. He believed that the woman was the spirit of the girl’s deceased mother, watching over her child even after death. Thanks to her warning, the little girl survived.

For the rest of his life, whenever he traveled through the forest beyond Okniny, he remembered the woman in the fog and wondered whether a mother’s love can truly transcend death.
